However, in both the real world and the virtual world, common sense and instincts are necessary to protect yourself from deceitful individuals. Here are Rightman's five 'Rules-of-the-Road' for safely navigating online relationships.

1. Be Cautious When Sharing Personal Information

• Don't give out your surname, real email address, personal website URL, home address, phone number, place of work or any other identifying information in your initial emails.
• Make sure your email signature is turned off or does not include identifying information.
• If you start corresponding by email, do not give out your surname, phone numbers or address details until you feel safe to do so.
• If you decide to exchange phone numbers, mobile numbers are best.

2. Use a Free Email Account

• If you choose to share your personal email address with another member it is strongly recommended you create a new email address with Hotmail, Yahoo or another free email service provider just for this purpose.
• To further protect your privacy, don't include your full name in the email address or in the sender's name.
• Don't use work emails as it is often all too easy to work out who themanager@thatcompany.com.au is.

3. Meet When You Are Ready

• You are never obliged to meet anyone. Take all the time you need, ask all the questions you want. Use sound judgement and be selective.
• Gradually collect information, get to know each other better and only then, if and when YOU feel comfortable, you can make a decision about revealing personal contact details and/ or meeting face-to-face.
• It is strongly recommended that you do not rush from chatting online to meeting face-to-face. Use the phone as an additional security measure as this adds a dimension to your communications that email lacks. You can tell a lot about a person on the phone. Just be sure to use a mobile number, and try using your phone's privacy features when you call for added security.

4. Choose a Public Place

• If you do decide to meet face-to-face, choose the time and place of your date wisely, preferably a busy public place that is familiar to you.
• Get a friend or relative to transport you to and from the first meeting, or arrive and leave on your own, using your own transport. Initially, don't get picked up or dropped off by the person you are meeting.

5. Trust Your Gut Instincts

• Always trust your instincts - if something doesn't feel right, stop communication. If you are on a date, leave. It may be a hunch that you can't logically explain, but trust yourself. If you feel uneasy there may be good reason.
• You are in control of the entire process. Make sure things progress at a comfortable pace. Be cautious and selective and always use common sense.
